Changed Lives – Haiti

Hi everyone!  This is the finished project from my trip to Haiti.  It’s actually been finished for a while, but for some reason, I was having problems getting it online.

The title “Changed Lives” stands for many things. Haitian’s lives were forever changed after the earthquake on January 12, 2010. Following the earthquake, the deadly water born disease, cholera, ran rabid through the tent cities, killing thousands.

Nonprofit organization Water Missions International has witnessed this change, because they were located in Haiti before the earthquake. But they are also working tirelessly to change the lives of many Haitians by giving them the ability to harvest safe water. This story dives into the importance of clean water, and why the people of Haiti are so desperate for sanitation.

Ever-adjusting Eyes

Before I left for Haiti, a great friend of mine named Dan told me to observe the eyes of the Haitians.  Initially, I thought it was a “cute” idea, one that I would come around to if I thought of it, or had the time.  Off the plane and out of the airport, I was more focused on my eyes – what I was seeing, where to look to see something new, where to never look again.  It wasn’t selfish, ignorant or closed, rather an mindless habit.

What I saw was pure devastation.  It is absolutely impossible to prepare for the sights…the reality…of Haiti.  Cities of tents ravaged with cholera lie in open dirt fields.  Mountains of garbage cast shadows over refrigerator boxes that house families of three, four, five, sometimes more.  Diseased dogs roam the streets, feeding on the corpses of roadkill (sometimes other dogs), digging through burned piles of trash, and drinking the running streams of urine from the many people who go to the bathroom on the sidewalk.  Children bathe in rivers littered with garbage, colored green.  And the smell…

After the first 30 minutes on the island, my eyes could take no more.  They moved, focused, and my eyelids twitched, but somewhere between pupil and brain, there was a disconnect.  I didn’t want to register these images, so I decided not to, unconsciously.  The only thing I could “feel” was the warm sun and steady island breeze, even amid all this suffering.

The Adventure of Faith

Hi everyone!

I know it has been terribly long since my last post… Thanksgiving to be exact.  Since I’ve been home, I’ve been working hard on finishing the final two stories from Slovakia.  Today, I am pleased to share with you The Adventure of Faith, the story of the Center for Christian Education in Martin, Slovakia.

I hope you enjoyed the video.

I want to let you all know that I will be traveling to Haiti this Thursday until the following Tuesday.  I will be putting together a story for Faith Lutheran Church in Aurora, IL, and Water Missions International (WMI).  WMI is a nonprofit organization that installs clean water systems in villages of third world countries that are in desperate need of clean water.  I am very grateful for this opportunity, and I hope some of you stay interested in this endeavor!

I, along with Pastor Rob Douglas and his daughter Katie, will hopefully post updates on this website. The internet situation is not entirely secure, and we only have a little time on this trip, but we’ll do our best!
